Diabetes, explained so anyone can understand it.

Every idea comes in simple words first, with a real-life example. Children can follow it. Parents can trust it. The science words are there when you want them.

Inside the body

How the body handles glucose: HealthyA simple picture, not to scale. Food is digested, glucose enters blood, and insulin from the pancreas tells the liver, muscle and fat what to do. Sugar goes up after food, insulin comes out, the body uses or stores the sugar, and the level comes back down.DigestionFood becomes fuelBloodstreamThe delivery roadPancreasSense and signalLiverStore and releaseMuscle & fatUse and save energyGlucose pathwayInsulin makers (islets)
Pancreas

The pancreas is the control room. It notices sugar rising and sends out insulin, the “please use the sugar” message.

For example: It works like a smoke detector: it senses something and rings the bell.

In science words: Beta cells in pancreatic islets couple glucose metabolism to insulin secretion. Nearby alpha cells release glucagon, especially when fasting.

The whole idea

Here is diabetes in three easy steps.

Read these three and you already understand the heart of it.

  1. Step 1

    Food becomes sugar

When you eat, your body breaks food into a tiny sugar called glucose. It travels in your blood.

For example: A slice of bread turns into tiny sugar pieces, like a toy taken apart into blocks.

  2. Step 2

    Insulin carries a message

Your pancreas sends insulin, a messenger that says “use this sugar for energy or store it”.

For example: Insulin is the teacher’s bell. When it rings, the class knows what to do.

  3. Step 3

    The body stays balanced

In diabetes, insulin is missing or ignored, so sugar stays too high for too long.

For example: If the bell breaks, or nobody listens, the classroom becomes messy.

One idea, three ways

Pick the words that fit you.

Here is what insulin does, told three ways. Every article on this site works like this: easy first, science later.

Insulin is a tiny messenger in your body. After you eat, it tells your body: “Use this sugar for energy, and save some for later!”

For example: It is like a teacher ringing the bell that says “Time to tidy up the classroom”. Everybody knows what to do.

The one-page mental model

Diabetes means there is too much sugar in the blood for too long, because the body does not have enough insulin or cannot use it well.

Quick answers

Questions people often ask.

No, not by itself. Type 1 happens when the body’s defenders harm the insulin makers. Type 2 grows from many things together, like family history, age, where the body stores fat, sleep and more. One sweet does not cause either.

For example: Like a flood: it takes a lot more than a single raindrop.
